Waste flow of water and fertilisers from aquaculture to agriculture

Aquaculture is the fastest growing food sector worldwide and 50% of all consumed fish is farmed. Swedish and European politicians alike have aquaculture development on their agenda for job creation and food production in the EU. Aquaculture is considered an environmentally hazardous activity and impacts on the environment and its organisms in both the short and the long term, not least with huge nitrogen and phosphorus emissions. By integrating aquaculture with agriculture more synergy effects can be realised, partly by better water utilization (used first for fish farming and then for irrigation) and partly by using the excess nutrients produced by aquaculture on farmland.
